Kuala lumpur: For decades, global trade, security, and development have been predominantly shaped by a select few Western powers, often promoting multilateralism yet resorting to hierarchical and coercive practices. This dominance has left many nations disillusioned, prompting them to explore an alternative vision presented by China.

According to Namibia Press Agency, China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI) represents a significant shift toward equity, fairness, and genuine free trade, elevating the voices of the Global South in international decision-making processes. The Global South has embraced the GGI, which is underpinned by five guiding principles: sovereign equality, adherence to international law, commitment to multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and a focus on real action.

Historically, the concept of sovereign equality remained largely theoretical, with international law often used as a tool by powerful nations. The GGI aims to rectify these imbalances. Within this framework, ASEAN plays a pivotal role. As a collective representing over 600 million individuals, ASEAN has consistently advocated for multilateralism and inclusivity. Initiatives such as the enhancement of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area and the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 align with the GGI’s vision, reinforcing the foundation of a multipolar world.

The ASEAN-China partnership exemplifies the potential of engagements guided by sovereign equality and mutual respect. ASEAN countries are empowered to shape outcomes collaboratively rather than being directed by external forces. This approach fosters cooperation that respects diversity and national interests, embodying the essence of a multipolar vision where power is equitably distributed.

For Malaysia, the GGI’s principles strongly resonate, aligning with its longstanding advocacy for fairness and equality in the international order. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted this new era’s spirit, emphasizing Asia’s role in authoring its future. Malaysia’s commitment extends to supporting global institution reforms, particularly at the United Nations, reflecting the GGI’s foundational principles.

By aligning with ASEAN and collaborating with China, Malaysia amplifies its voice and that of the region. Practical initiatives, such as free trade enhancements and regional connectivity projects, not only advance inclusivity and fairness but also yield tangible benefits. Malaysia’s proactive stance is integral to shaping the future world order, ensuring that national interests are defended while contributing to a new global architecture.

The path to reform is challenging, with resistance anticipated from those who benefited from the old order. However, the momentum for change is evident. The Global South is poised to transition from being observers to authors, collaboratively scripting the next chapter of world history.
