A four-year-old girl on Tuesday allegedly drowned in a sewage pond at Kalkfeld settlement while her parents were at home.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Wednesday said the girl was identified on Tuesday as Michelle Oases.

“Her body was retrieved shortly before sunset the same day, and it was with the assistance of the Otjiwarongo Municipality’s emergency officers,” said Mbeha.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that Oases allegedly walked to the sewage pond at about 14h10 with two playmates aged four and six years, both boys.

The pond is situated a few metres from houses at Kalkfeld and it is not fenced off, Mbeha said.

At approximately 14h30, the two boys who were with the little girl reportedly returned home running and informed their parents and those of Oases that she had fallen into a sewage hole and did not come out.

The parents then reported the matter to the Kalkfeld and Otjiwarongo police stations, who teamed up with the officers of the Otjiwarongo Municipality’s emergency services to retrieve her body at 18h30 on Tuesday.

Mbeha said no foul play is suspected so far and Inquest no. 03/2021 has been registered at the Kalkfeld Police Station in connection with the matter.

Police investigations continue.
