The chairperson of the Gobabis Municipal Council management committee, De Waal Louw, died on Wednesday after contracting COVID-19.
Louw was elected as the management committee chairperson in December 2020 after emerging victorious in the November 2020 Regional and Local Authority elections.
Paying tribute to the late councillor during a live recording on the Gobabis Municipality Facebook page, Gobabis Mayor Elvire Theron and other municipal councillors; colleagues of the late Louw, remembered him by the principles he stood for, saying he was a person who edicated his life to community development.
Theron said Louw’s death is a great loss to the town, adding that as a council they will carry on what he stood for and continue to bring development to the town.
“We started a journey together and now we have to continue without him. We are going to run this race and we are going to carry his heart wherever we go as we know that his heart was for the people and the development of Gobabis and as a council, we will build on that,” she said.
Councillor Melba Tjozongoro said Louw’s sudden passing came as a shock to them, stating that they will keep his memory alive as they continue pulling the wagon of development forward for the sake of the Gobabis residents.
Management committee member, Sylvester Mbinga added, saying Louw’s death is not only a great loss to the council, but also a loss to the business fraternity as he was also a businessman.
“Louw was very dedicated and committed to transforming Gobabis as a jewel of the east. We learned a great deal in the last six months that we have worked with him,” Mbinga said.
