United nations: A Chinese envoy emphasized that the Golan Heights are internationally recognized as occupied Syrian territory. Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, underscored the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Sun Lei referenced Security Council Resolution 497 from 1981, which declares the occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights as null and void. Sun highlighted the necessity for the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions following the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2811. This resolution renews the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force on the Golan Heights, known as UNDOF, for another six months.

The envoy stressed that all parties must adhere to the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria, and emphasized that unauthorized foreign forces should not be present in the area of separation between the two countries. Ensuring the fulfillment of UNDOF’s mandate, as authorized by the Security Council, is crucial, Sun added.

Sun Lei also pointed out that a peaceful and stable environment is essential for a comprehensive solution to the Syrian issue. He noted a recent terrorist attack in Homs, which resulted in significant casualties, highlighting the ongoing grave and complex counter-terrorism situation in Syria. Sun called on the Syrian transitional government to meet its international obligations and take effective measures against all international terrorist organizations listed by the Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, to achieve security and stability in the country.
