Government directs granting of citizenship to genocide victims’ descendants

The Namibian government has directed the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to implement the proposal of giving citizenship to descendants of the 1904 to 1908 genocide victims who wish to return from Botswana and other countries.

This was announced by tMinister of Information and Communication Technology, Peya Mushelenga, while announcing Cabinet decisions.

In a statement availed to the media on Friday, Mushelenga said the decision was one of the resolutions taken from the sixth Swapo Party Extraordinary Congress held in 2018, to give Namibian citizenship to those who wish to return to Namibia from Botswana and other countries, after their parents and grandparents were displaced due to the genocide that took place in Namibia between 1904 and 1908.

The minister further announced that Cabinet also approved a proposal by the Ministry of Health and Social Services to discontinue providing all pre-service training of medical and health-related training courses, and that the ministry should consider a gradual phase-out approach and pass the training on to institutions of high learning.

Cabinet has also approved that the fellowship assistance programme conducted by the health ministry be put on hold and that the Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan be used to guide the field of specialisation and advanced training needs requirements. The ministry was directed to secure funding for current students under the fellowship sponsorship until they complete their training.
