Hardap to celebrate Heritage Week in Mariental

Residents of the Hardap Region will next week celebrate the Namibian Heritage Week in Mariental under the theme 'NamibiaB |o|gauba sao', Khoekhoegowab for 'Follow the Namibian beat'.

Cultural Officer in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, Brumilda Gertze told Nampa on Saturday that the purpose of the week, scheduled for 16 to 20 September is to create awareness on the importance of culture among the learners and the community.

It is actually a week where we want them to also acquaint themselves with the different cultures in the country as well as to know our rich cultural heritage, she said.

Gertze said through the week, learners will further be encouraged to discover, appreciate, promote and preserve the tangible and intangible heritage of Namibia, so they can widen the scope of understanding of their cultures and heritage.

We want the learners to have pride in their cultures and those of others. We want them to cultivate a culture of reading and gain knowledge of culture through research on specific topics, she noted.

High Schools in Aranos, Gibeon, Mariental and Rehoboth will take part in a public speaking competition and will also conduct research on a cultural and heritage theme and present their findings to other learners, while the primary schools will take part in the traditional games competition, as well as in the arts and cultural expo and festival.

Other activities lined up include awareness on the traditional initiation process of a girl, and competitions in poetry, traditional cuisine and creative design.

The cultural officer therefore called residents of Hardap to be part of the event and witness the diverse cultures of the region.
