Hit and run accused granted bail in Rehoboth

The 48-year-old Rehoboth woman arrested on Sunday for an alleged hit and run incident in Rehoboth's Kuvukiland on Saturday made her first appearance at the Rehoboth Magistrates Court on Monday.

Esmerelda Benz made her first appearance in front of Magistrate KandinawapaNangombe on a charge of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving and failure to assist the victim after an accident on the first count and driving without a license on the second count.

She was granted bail of N.dollars 6 000 and warned to appear in court on 12 August.

An 11-year-old girl identified as Danelle Mouton was struck and killed by the car allegedly driven by the accused on Saturday.

It is alleged that Benz driving a silver Toyota Tazz with a Rehoboth registration number, came speeding in a street where children were playing.

According to earlier police reports, the children ran in different directions to escape the speeding vehicle, but the driver who could not handle the vehicle veered off the road and drove into a nearby yard through the fence and hit the child who ran into a zinc house.

The child died on the spot.

Winnie Christiaans represented Benz in the matter while Public Prosecutor Abraham Abraham appeared for the State.
