Namibia’s Africa Mix Martial Arts featherweight champion Veja Hinda said he will not allow the African title to derail him from perfecting his craft as a Mixed Martial Arts fighter.

Hinda was crowned African Champion in the featherweight category at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Africa Championship held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 28 to 30 April 2022.

Speaking to the media at a press conference here Thursday, Hinda said competing at the IMMAF championships was an eye-opener.

“I feel good to be a gold medallist and I want to already start preparing for the upcoming competition because I don’t want the gold to distract me,” he said.

He added that having an experienced coach on the ringside helped him and his teammates win silverware for Namibia.

“While in the ring I was composed and focused because I trusted the coach’s instructions. But I am going to take it one step at a time going forward as I do not know what the future holds and I also don’t want to make a lot of promises as I am no fortune teller,” said Hinda.

As an African champion, Hinda will represent Namibia at the 2022 IMMAF World Championships. The venue and dates are still to be communicated.

The Namibian Mix Martial Arts team coach Carlos de Sousa said Namibia has talent and their achievements at the IMMAF Africa Championships have now put them on the IMMAF map.

“This was our first IMMAF Games medals which now opened up doors for the Mix Martial Arts sport in the country as we have been invited to Ghana for the African champs,” said De Sousa who stated that his team has also been invited to compete at the Mix Martial Arts Super Cup.

The coach also stated that apart from international competitions the martial arts body in Namibia will host its championships during the months of July and September 2022.

“The Desert Storm championship will see Namibians competing against other nations in Swakopmund on 01 July 2022, while in September we are going to host the King and Queen Championships in Windhoek,” said De Sousa.
