Government has lifted the restriction on the importation of second-hand cars older than eight years into Namibia.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade (MIT) on Monday announced Cabinet’s decision to approve the importing of non-commercial vehicles, which was restricted since 2013.

“The decision was taken to improve industry performance given the prevailing global economic situation and its effect on Namibia’s economic sectors and industries,” the document noted.

It stated that the approval is extended to import age-restricted non-commercial vehicles up to 12 years from the current capping age limit of eight years, effective for a period of two years.

MIT will further undertake annual assessments of the global economic situation to observe any improvement that will necessitate the removal of the two years relief measure.
