Jacobs qualifies to the next round of 100m events at AG

Jolene Jacobs was the only Namibian sprinter competing in the track and field events who made it through to the next round of the 100 metre at the African Games.

The athletics championships only started with their competitions on Monday morning at the 12th edition of the African Games which are being held in Rabat and Casablanca, Morocco.

Jacobs finished second in heat six of the women's 100m at the Olympic stadium- MoulayAbdellah Sports Complex. She ran a time of 12 seconds to come just behind the winner BasantHemida of Egypt who ran a time of 11.86 seconds.

Other Namibian athletes who also competed in the preliminary rounds of the 100m event saw GlobineMayova eliminated from the championships after running a time of 12.54 seconds to finish fifth in heat three.

In the men's event Maseko Gilbert Hainuca was disqualified for a wrong started but he protested his disqualification and was allowed to compete in heat three of the men's 100 event and qualified to the next round after finishing third in a time of 10.55 seconds but after reviews his time was swiped out as his first disqualification for a wrong start stood.

Another Namibian who did not make it to the semi-finals of the 100m was Lionel Coetzee who finished eighth in heat five. Coetzee ran a time of 10.83 second to finish second last in the heat that was won by Raymond Ekovwo of Nigeria who clocked 10.20 seconds.

The semi-finals of the 100m event will be held on Monday at 18h00 Namibian time.
