Kanyanga re-elected as Rundu mayor

Gabriel Kanyanga of the Swapo Party has retained his position as the mayor of Rundu following internal local authority council elections on Friday.

Johanna Kakondo of Swapo was re-elected as the deputy mayor.

The councillors were sworn in on Friday during the event which was officiated by Rundu Magistrate Murray Shikongo.

Swapo’s Engelbert Muyenga also retained his position as chairperson of the management committee while Regina Nakare (Swapo) along with the chairperson of the Rundu Concerned Citizens Association, Reginald Ndara, also retained their positions as members of the management committee.

Swapo holds the most seats at the Rundu Town Council, accounting for four out of seven seats.

Rundu Urban Community Association technical chairperson, Nicolaus Ndumba and Rosalia Nanghuti of the Independent Patriots for Change were sworn in as ordinary councillors.

In his acceptance speech, Kanyanga said besides the problems the town faces, the council will continue to look at the issue of housing.

The council plans to establish townships to address the issue of housing at the town.

“The residents of Rundu can also recognise the challenges that the council has gone through and my office has also recognised them and we are working around the clock to make sure that we address the matters,” said Kanyanga.

Kanyanga said Rundu needs all stakeholders, including the management of the town and the residents, to work together to develop the town. He stressed that his office is open to everyone for any advice or corrections to see that the town is moving forward.
