The Kapako and Musese constituencies won the football and netball categories of the Kavango West Governor’s Cup on Saturday.
The third edition of the tournament started on Thursday and was contested by all eight constituencies in the Kavango West region in both football and netball categories.
The tournament’s coordinator Egidius Nambara told Nampa on Sunday that each winning constituency walked away with a trophy, gold medals as well as a brand new soccer and netball kit.
Mpungu and Mankumpi constituencies came in second and third place, respectively in the football category while Mankumpi and Ncamagoro constituencies won second and third place in the netball category.
The tournament is an initiative of the Office of the Governor in collaboration with the Namibia Football Association Regional Executive Committee, a platform used to scout for under 20 players for the annual Namibian Newspaper Cup Tournament.
‘Overall, the tournament went well. There was a big improvement in terms of competition from all teams. All teams played with the desire to win and many players demonstrated talent,’ Nambara boasted.
He however said there is still a concern about the lack of national documents among participants being experienced in constituencies as some good players were left out of the competition due to a lack of documents such as Identity Documents and full birth certificates.
Nambara further said, 22 soccer and 16 netball players were selected for the regional team that will represent Kavango West at The Namibian Newspaper Cup set for 07 to 10 April in Otjiwarongo.
All players, he added will go into a two-week training camp at Kandjimi Murangi Secondary School Hostel until their departure to Otjiwarongo on 06 April and thus called on the business community and sports lovers to come on board to assist with funds or any kind of assistance to the teams as they prepare for the Newspaper Cup.
The third edition of the Kavango West Governor’s Cup was sponsored by Recon Africa, Metzger Drilling, Siruwo Guesthouse, Kelvin Kanyata Architects, Mbambi Farming, AMTA Rundu, OK Foods, and Mungongi Foundation.
The Ncuncuni constituency will host the 2024 Kavango West Governor’s Cup.
