Katutura Expo kicks off Thursday

Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila will be opening the 9th edition of the Katutura Expo on Thursday 31 October, Chairperson of the organising committee and Katutura Central Constituency Councillor Ambrosius Kandjii told Nampa in an interview on Monday.

Kandjii told Nampa the expo which is scheduled to take place from the 30 October to the 3rd November is aimed at uplifting the community of Katutura by availing a market to small scale businesses, exhibitors and corporates to engage within the community in the trade of goods and services.

Kandjii said they have so far received confirmation of attendance from 136 exhibitors amongst them small scale kapana vendors, medium sized clothing traders and corporates from the banking sector.

At our first expo we only had 11 exhibitors, last year we had a total of 89 and this year we have more than 100, 136 exhibitors be specific, Kandjii emphasised.

Kandjii told Nampa there will also be an Agricultural show for both big and small livestock, he however admitted that due to the drought participation in this sector of the event has been decreasing over the past three years.

Kandjii added that although they have received various sponsors to ensure the success of the expo he is appealing for more sponsors to ensure that the expo remains a relevant platform within the community of Katutura.

He said the economic downturn in the country has also had a negative effect on the expo, that may be why sponsors have not been forthcoming as in previous years when the expo was still new.

Secretary of the organising committee Jarijo Katjimune told Nampa previous exhibitors at the expo have re-applied to take part in its 9th instalment.

One of the exhibitors who sold handbags came back and told us she got a lot of leads and follow-ups since her participation last year and this has allowed her to increase her sales, Katjimune replied when asked about the direct impact the expo has had on the community and exhibitors at the expo.

The maiden Katutura expo took place in the year 2011. It has since grown into a permanent fixture on the Windhoek social calendar.
