Veteran politician and former DTA president Katuutire Kaura has died.

He was 81.

Details around his death remain sketchy at the moment, but family member and Popular Democratic Movement (former DTA) lawmaker Kazeongere Tjeundo confirmed that he passed away during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Kaura became DTA president in 1998, replacing the exiled Mishake Muyongo, following a failed attempt to secede the Caprivi Region (now Zambezi) from Namibia. It is a position he held until 2013, when he lost to McHenry Venaani at DTA’s intraparty congress.

Kaura later joined the ruling Swapo Party and served as special advisor to the Kunene governor.
