Kavango East region to host National Readathon week

The Directorate of Education Library Services in the Kavango East Region under the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture will this year host the 2019 National Readathon Celebration.

The National Readathon will be held at Maria Mwengere Senior Secondary School under the theme Read Namibia: Combat drought to improve food security.

The Director of Education in the region Fanuel Kapapero in a media statement issued on Thursday said each year the Namibia Library and Archive Services (NLAS) selects a region to host the event.

Last year the national readathon was celebrated in the Omusati Region.

During this year's celebrations the Goethe Institute Namibia in partnership with NLAS will run reading workshops for librarians and teachers, the director explained.

Storytelling sessions for children and many more other activities to support awareness of reading for young people will also be held.

The reading week will run from 23 September and culminate with the national readathon day on 27 September.

The readathon the director said also seeks to address the topical issues plaguing country especially on drought experienced currently.

Namibia has been experiencing persistent drought for the past three years, which has caused farmers to de-stock and has affected over a quarter of the population, who have no food security. It is imperative that while we celebrate reading, we also take time to educate our youth on drought issues, his statement read.

The education director said during this month, children are encouraged to read good, meaningful books as this will equip them for the challenges they will face in the future.

Kapapero said the official launch of the readathon will happen on 23 September while a price award ceremony will take place on the last day of the readathon which is 27 September.
