Keetmanshoop United 12 Netball club from the ||Kharas Region and the Golden Gals from Omaheke emerged victorious at the Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) National Netball Premier League playoffs held in Mariental over the weekend.
The two teams now qualify for the MTC National Netball Premier League scheduled to start at the end of April.
In the tournament played between six teams from Omaheke, ||Kharas and Hardap, Golden Gals won all five games that they played, while Keetmanshoop United 12 won four and lost one.
According to Keetmanshoop United 12 team manager, Gladys Sekwate, it is the first time that a team from the ||Kharas Region has qualified to play in the premier league.
“It is the first time a team from ||Kharas has made it to the netball premier league and we could like to ask the inhabitants of this town and region to support us. We will not fall back. We are striving to make this region proud,” she said.
Team coach Victoria Shidi said they have seen the potential in southern Namibia.
“All we need as coaches and team managers is to come together and established a strong team that will represent us at these games. We have young, good players who just need to be coached and they will go a long way,” said Shidi.
Speaking while welcoming the team back home, Keetmanshoop Mayor, Maree Smit, lauded the team’s efforts.
“We urge individuals or businesses to come on board and assist the team. We know that there will be a lot travelling and some other challenges that they might have, so we urge those that are able to assist, to assist,” she pleaded, adding that the team will represent both Keetmanshoop and the ||Kharas region.
