The Khorixas Town Council (KTC) has acquired a hydro blast pump valued at N.dollars 510 000 to unblock drains at the town.

Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, chief executive officer of KTC, Andreas /Howoseb said that the purchase of the pump was necessitated by constant drain blockages that have been experienced at the town over the past few years.

“This machine will enable the council to unblock drains on a daily basis. With all the diseases such as hepatitis the council has taken the decision to purchase the machine in order to tackle the drain issue as it is very unhygienic for the residents and visitors once the drains are blocked,” he said.

/Howoseb added that the council is busy to improve sanitation and hygiene in at the town and the hydro blast pump could not have come at the right time.

The council has also planned to replace old sewerage pipes in the location, said /Howoseb.

“The council will also replace some sewerage pipes in the location where most drain blockages are reported. Some pipes have never been replaced before and replacing those pipes is one of the top prioritise on the council’s agenda,” he said.

/Howoseb added that the council has is working together with the residents to stop people from dumping waste in drains.

Some drain blockages are caused by residents, said /Howoseb.

“People are directly dumping waste in drains. They do this by removing lids of the drains and dumping waste such as household waste. This waste making it difficult for water to flow resulting in drain blockages. I would like to urge the residents to stop with these illegal practices. Drain blockages can have serious effects on the health of the residents,” he said.

/Howoseb added that the council would be calling a meeting to educate residents on dangers of dumping wastes in drains as this has been a major concern for the council.
