Some parents in Swakopmund are concerned that their children might not get school placement.

Johanna Haitula who has been looking for Grade 7 placement for her daughter said she was told to go back to the Teachers’ Resource Centre on 16 January, after she went there on Wednesday as instructed late last year.

“She was schooling in Windhoek but due to circumstances she had to move to Swakopmund, hence this struggle for placement. I am going to continue going around every school just to try and find space myself, however I am hopeful that even if she does not get placement right now, she will eventually get something before classes commence,” Haitula expressed to Nampa.

Another guardian seeking Grade 1 placement for her nephew said although of age, the boy could not start school last year as she had to sort out his national documents.

“Last year, there was space for him but he did not have a birth certificate, therefore the school he applied to could not accept him. Now that issue has been resolved but we were told to come back at a later stage,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Education in Erongo through notices said there is no longer space for Grade 1 learners at any school in the region and that no new waiting lists were going to be issued.

Some parents also expressed concern with the situation of school placement noting that it is the same issue every year where parents have to scramble for spaces in the region due to a lack of sufficient schools and classrooms.

Meanwhile, former Swakopmund mayor and current Constituency Councillor Louisa Kativa told Nampa on Wednesday that the construction of the two new schools – Matutura Primary School and the Tamariskia Extension 1 Secondary School in Swakopmund commenced last year and completion is only slated for 2024.
