Walvis bay: Speakers at a pre-memorial service held in Walvis Bay on Tuesday evening remembered the late businessman John Savva as a visionary leader whose generosity and community spirit transformed the Erongo Region. Former Deputy Minister of Labour Relations and Job Creations and former Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council Hafeni Ndemula described Savva as a pioneer and a man of integrity whose influence extended far beyond business.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Ndemula highlighted Savva’s role in creating industries and opportunities, especially for young people through mentorship, job creation, and personal support, saying he was a father figure, a provider, a protector, and a guide. “His kindness knew no boundaries,” he noted, recalling a personal moment in 2012 when Savva stood by him during the loss of his family members.

Deputy Director of Education in the Erongo Region, Natalia Guriras, said Savva played a critical role in advancing education in the region. “For many years, he faithfully sponsored the Education Excellence Awards and opened the doors of his hotel, Atlantic, to host these ceremonies year after year without ever asking for anything in return,” she said.

Guriras further highlighted his investment in infrastructure, including the construction of science laboratories and classrooms at Duinesig High School, as well as sponsoring the annual Advanced Subsidiary Motivation Breakfast and Gala Dinner since 2021.

Chairperson of the Erongo Sports Fraternity, Daniel Mouton, paid tribute to Savva’s contributions to sport and youth development, recalling how his support enabled young athletes to travel to Norway in 2006 to participate in an international tournament. “He gave five pairs of soccer boots to boys who were travelling abroad for the first time. Today, some of them are playing professionally,” Mouton said.

Savva was not only a sponsor but also a mentor and role model who nurtured talent, supported community events, and inspired young people to dream big. The 77-year-old Savva, who was an honorary consul for Cyprus and Greece, passed away on Saturday at Walvis Bay, after an illness.
