Lions in mixed results at SA tourney

Namibia's Lions Basketball Team has recorded mixed results at the ongoing Basketball Africa League Qualifying Tournament currently underway in Johannesburg in South Africa.

The team which is in group E with Ferroviario Maputo of Mozambique, University of Zambia Pacers from Zambia, Dolphins Basketball Club of Botswana, Jozi Nuggets of South Africa and Mercenaries of Zimbabwe.

According to Lions lost their first match 65-55 to the Mercenaries of Zimbabwe, before losing to Ferroviario Maputo by 102-60.

They however surprised local favourites Jozi Nuggets 74-67 on Thursday evening to register their first win.

Lions who are coached by Anthony Williams Auchab led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter but a strong comeback in the second quarter guided the South African side to a 38-33 halftime lead.

Allan Nghixulifwa was the top performer for the Namibians posting impressive statistics of a double scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds while his teammates Michael Popisi Mukumbutaa and Joe Sinala Banda added 15 and 14 points in that order to earn a well-deserved victory for the Lions.

They followed it up by losing to Dolphins 93-88 points.

Lions will face University of Zambia Pacers on Sunday afternoon in their final group game.

Speaking to Nampa from South Africa via WhatsApp, Nigel Mubita, the Khomas Basketball Association President and Team Manager said in the match against University of Zambia Pacers, the Namibia side was hard done by fatigue and injuries to key players, leading to their overtime defeat.

The boys have asserted themselves well. They have been competitive throughout the tournament. With a bit of luck, we could be talking a different story, he said.
