List of athletes to compete at AAG set up

A provisional list of 126 athletes, coaches and official have been set up to represent Namibia at the 2019 All Africa Games (AAG) that will be held in Morocco from 19 to 31 August.

Team Namibia will compete in 14 sport codes at the AAG that will see Africa's best competing amongst each other.

Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Victoria Katukula the Chef de Mission for team Namibia said they have selected a small group of athletes who they believe will represent the country well.

At the moment we are having a provisional list of athletes whom we want to take to Morocco but that list might change if some of these athletes don't meet the qualifying standards at the championships they are currently competing at,

Katukula added that the reason for taking a small group is due to the financial constraints that the country finds itself in.

We want to compete at these games that is one reason why we selected the best of the best in the country. Our goal at these games is to see these athletes reaching the Olympic qualifying standards so they can represent the country in Tokyo, Japan next year, Katukula said.

The Chef de Mission stated that teams are currently training on their own despite not receiving their preparation funds from the government.

Team Namibia ended seventh overall out of 50 countries that participated at the 2015 AAG in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Namibia won five gold medals, four silvers and six bronze. All gold medals were won by Namibia's athletes with disabilities.
