LPM calls out “arrogant” police officer

Chaos broke out at one of the polling stations in Swakopmund after some members of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) accused a police officer at that station of intimidating voters.

The party members, who include Member of Parliament, Henny Seibeb, accused the police officer of blocking the entrance of the DRC Project School polling station when voters tried to enter.

“The officer was blocking and intimidating the voters who were trying to enter the polling station, instead of asking them politely to queue up in an orderly manner while they wait for their turn.

When you block the entrance, the old, illiterate and vulnerable people will feel threatened when they see a policeman trying to stop them. Instead of being a peacemaker, he has confused his role with that of an officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia,” Seibeb noted.

The MP pleaded with police officers stationed at polling stations to carry out their duties fairly and not put voters in compromising situations, which may lead them to turn back and not cast their votes.

Meanwhile, LPM Political Czar and Windhoek Councillor, Ivan Skrywer, emphasised that there will be no elections without different political parties.

“Elections are at the centre of our democracy and we do not take them lightly. There are those calling us (LPM) dramatic and it does not matter because when it comes to our democracy, we are unapologetic about anything and we will forever be dramatic due to experiences such as these,” Skrywer noted.

ECN Erongo regional coordinator, Amos Nguaiko, informed the party members that if there is an issue regarding the election process, parties should approach ECN officials in order to amicably solve the issues instead of causing a spectacle.

“I have spoken to the officer in question and the issue has been resolved,” Nguaiko noted.
