Major Lameck Ithete dies

ONGWEDIVA: One of the pioneers of the liberation struggle, Lameck Ithete, passed away on Tuesday at the Medipark Private Hospital at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region.

He was admitted there due to illness since 18 July 2014.

One of his relatives, Natangwe Ithete, confirmed this to Nampa on Tuesday evening.

Lameck, 87, was one of a group of Swapo freedom fighters who launched the armed liberation struggle at Omugulugoombashe in the Omusati Region on 26 August 1966.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba conferred the liberation and commendation medals on Lameck and several other freedom fighters during the Heroes’ Day commemoration at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region on 26 August 2007.

Lameck was granted a military rank of major at the same time.

He is survived by his wife Selma and two children, Herman Nangolo Ithete and Ndapewa Ithete.

More details concerning Lameck’s death and the funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

He lived at the Ongozi village near Okahao in the Omusati Region.
