A 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning for the alleged possession of mandrax tablets at a roadblock on the B1 road between Okakarara and Otjiwarongo.

It is alleged that the suspect, who was travelling in a vehicle en route to Outjo from Windhoek, jumped out of the vehicle as it approached the roadblock. He was then apprehended by the police officers and brought back to the roadblock.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, in an interview with Nampa on Thursday said the incident happened at about 10h00.

Mbeha said the police had mounted a mobile roadblock at the T-junction, where vehicles were being randomly stopped, inspected or searched for suspicious goods.

The police then asked each occupant in the sedan to stand next to his or her bag, in order to see what was inside, she said.

“Inside the suspect’s bag, 100 full madrax tablets were found stashed, together with a large parcel of cannabis weighing 425 grams,” said Mbeha.

The drugs, worth N.dollars 33 250, were then confiscated and the suspect was arrested for the possession and/or dealing in drugs.

He is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
