Man arrested on charge of unlawful possession of protected game products

A 28-year-old man from Elondo village in the Omusati Region was arrested last Thursday at Ondangwa on a charge of unlawful possession of protected game products.

The Deputy Commander of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s anti-poaching operation, Deputy Commissioner Peter William told Nampa yesterday Elifas Shoombe Shaanika was arrested at Okapana Service Station at 17h58.

He was found in possession of one elephant tusk hidden under a pile of old clothes in a suitcase.

‘The weight and value are not yet determined,’ William said.

The NamPol Deputy Commissioner said Shaanika appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s court on Monday, when his case was postponed to 17 November this year for further police investigations.

He remains in police custody at Ondangwa as bail was not granted during his brief court appearance.
