Mariental woman kills boyfriend over stolen money

MARIENTAL: A 33-year-old woman from Mariental’s Aimablaagte residential area in the Hardap Region was arrested last week for allegedly killing her boyfriend in a money-related fight.

George Swartbooi, 26, was allegedly stabbed and killed with a broken bottle on the left cheek by his girlfriend Rosina Swartz on 22 January for apparently stealing an unspecified amount of money from her.

The Hardap Crime Investigations’ Coordinator for the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), Deputy Commissioner Johanna Situde confirmed to Nampa on Tuesday that Swartbooi was confirmed dead upon arrival at the Mariental State Hospital.

“The deceased lost a lot of blood through the wound. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival,” the Deputy Commissioner stated.

Situde said Swartz told the investigating officer that she stabbed her boyfriend with a bottle as he stole money from her and used it for drinks, money which was meant to buy something for Swartz’s baby.

Although they were dating, the deceased is not the father of the baby in question.

According to Situde, the police are still investigating the case to establish how much money was stolen, and whether the money was the real motive behind the fight that led to the death.

“It is her version that she stabbed the deceased because he stole her baby’s money. So, we will establish whether this is actually true, or there was something else,” the top cop said.

Meanwhile, the accused was remanded in custody after her case was postponed to 27 February 2014 for further police investigations, and to give her time to apply for legal representation.

Situde said despite this incident, she is happy that crimes in the Hardap Region had declined over the past five months, and she was hoping that it will continue like that.

“It has been very quiet in this region. We did not have a lot of crimes such as murder and theft, which is a very good thing,” she noted.
