Masilingi qualifies for semi-finals in 200m at World Champs

Namibia’s sole representative at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Beatrice Masilingi, reached the next round of the 200 metre (m) events after comfortably winning her heat.

The 18th edition of the 2022 World Athletics Championships is currently underway at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States of America (USA).

Namibia’s Under-20 World Athletics Championships silver medallist in the 100m and 200m made her senior World Athletics Championships debut in style after she comfortably won her heat with a seasonal best of 22.27 seconds.

The Namibian beat Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson, who specialises in the 400 metres. Jackson won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay and bronze in the 4x400m relay at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

While at the World Athletics Championships, Oregon 2022, the Jamaican sprinter won a silver medal in the 100m sprint when she finished behind her teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

In their 200m heat on Tuesday morning, the Jamaican sprinter finished behind Masilingi with a time of 22.33 seconds.

Aminatou Seyni from Niger ran the fastest time during the heats with a time of 21.98 seconds, which was her country’s new national record.

Masilingi will now compete in heat two of the semi-finals on Wednesday morning Namibian time alongside 200m Olympic Games gold medallist Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica, Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain and Tamara Clark of the US.
