Minister commends Board of Directors, management and staff of OPE for providing safe, reliable and sustainable electricity

OSHAKATI: Mines and Energy Minister, Obeth Kandjoze commended the Board of Directors, management and staff of Oshakati Premier Electric (OPE) for providing safe, reliable and sustainable electricity.

Speaking at the celebration of OPE’s 15th year of electricity distribution and supply at Oshakati in the Oshana Region on Friday, he called on other electricity distributors to emulate the good example of OPE.

The 15th anniversary coincided with the commissioning of an electrification project for Oshakati’s Ompumbu and Okandjengedi South informal settlements to the value of N.dollars 4.4 million.

The minister charged that it is only when adequate maintenance is done that infrastructure will remain in good condition and be able to be utilized to supply electricity to the community.

OPE was established in April 2000 as a 50/50 joint venture between the Oshakati Town Council and Namibian power utility company, NamPower, to distribute and supply electricity within the town of Oshakati.

During June 2007, NamPower’s share was settled and the Oshakati Town Council became the sole shareholder of OPE.
