Miss Namibia, Chelsi Shikongo, has urged the youth to involve themselves in constructive activities that will help their mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She was speaking while accepting a donation from QKR Namibia Navachab Gold Mine.

The company handed over cheques of N.dollars 25 000 each to Shikongo and boxer and Erongo resident, Jonas Junias, here on Friday.

“This pandemic should teach us how to be self-sufficient and it is important to invest time in acquiring self-sufficiency skills and new skills that can be useful in one’s future. The youth need to focus on what they can do for themselves and what they would like to be remembered for when they leave this earth. We should really take this time to do introspection,” she said.

Shikongo urged her fellow youth to also look into healing and coping mechanisms, noting that although it is difficult for some people who look at alcohol and drugs as refuge, it is helpful.

The beauty queen further urged Namibians, especially her fellow youth, to get vaccinated. Shikongo said she has already been vaccinated and is proud of her decision.

Navachab Managing Director George Botshiwe in his remarks said the donations are to support the two while they represent Namibia as well as the Erongo Region on the international platforms of Miss Universe and the Olympic.

“We fully understand that in the execution of your duties there are expenses and as a corporate company in Erongo, we felt the need to support our own to blossom. We are very willing to support our local talents because we cannot just leave everything to government. We should chip in where we can in order to help drive a message of hope to people within the communities,” Botshiwe said.

Erongo Governor Neville Andre Itope thanked the mine for responding to the call by his office to support local heroes and called on more private companies to come on board and offer their support in order to encourage other young people from less privileged backgrounds to not give up on their dreams.
