MME confirms earthquake at Khorixas

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has confirmed that an earthquake occurred 44 kilometres northwest of Khorixas in the Kunene Region on Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry's Deputy Executive Director, Gloria Simubali said the earthquake was recorded at about 16h32 on all ten seismic stations of the Namibian Seismology Network.

The statement noted that the earthquake was shallow at a depth of less than 10 kilometres with local magnitude of 4.1 Mc.

The Geological Survey of Namibia will send out a team in the field tomorrow to assess and gather information of the event from affected communities, it said.

The ministry noted that precautionary measures in case of an earthquake includes, individuals finding themselves indoor should try to go outside safely or stand near door frames or get refuge by going under the table.

Furthermore, individuals outdoors should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and power lines.

No injuries or destruction recorded.
