Month-end stabbings claim five lives in //Karas

KEETMANSHOOP: Five families in the //Karas Region are mourning the deaths of loved ones after they were stabbed to death between Thursday and Sunday. Police incident reports obtained from the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s regional Crime Investigations’ Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Isaak on Sunday indicate that the stabbings occurred in Keetmanshoop and Karasburg. The 21-year-old-Erlico Otto died on the spot after being stabbed with a sharp object on the left side of his chest in Keetmanshoop’s Tseiblaagte residential area on Thursday evening.

The police arrested two young men, both aged 19, in connection with Otto’s death. It is not clear what led to the stabbing. The 30-year-old Rebekka Gertze from Keetmanshoop also lost her life on the spot when she was stabbed by a 28-year-old female suspect on Friday at around 01h50. The two had allegedly been drinking at a house in the TransNamib residential area. She was stabbed with a knife on the right side of her chest. The police have still not determined the cause of the fight.

On the same Friday evening Johanna Both, 41, died on the spot after being stabbed in the chest.
A 43-year-old male was arrested in connection with Both’s death. The police could not say what led to the incident. On Saturday evening at a bar in the Ileni informal settlement of Keetmanshoop, the 21-year-old Tanya Claassen died on the spot after she was allegedly stabbed in the neck with a sharp object. The suspect in the matter is a 23-year-old male.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, another murder case was reported at Graswater farm at Karasburg, where Frans Shortie Rooi (age unknown) died on arrival at the Karasburg State Hospital. Rooi was allegedly stabbed twice in the stomach and once in the ribs and neck, and also hit on the head with a rock after being involved a fight. He allegedly owed the 31-year-old man accused of killing him N.dollars 50. Another death was recorded when a man died of a snake bite at Warmbad.

The 43-year-old Benedictus Matroos died in his bed on Saturday evening after being bitten by a snake.
“He allegedly killed a snake. After that he went home and his wife, Maria Matroos, asked him if he was fine as he appeared to be sick. He said he was fine but it came to light later that he was bitten by the snake. He was declared dead that evening,” Isaak told Nampa.

The next of kin of all deceased have already been informed, and police investigations into all deaths continue. Isaak also noted that all suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in court at Keetmanshoop and Karasburg on Monday.
