Multiple human remains were found in Walvis Bay behind the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) facility on Monday, following the discovery of a human skull Sunday.

In a telephonic interview with Nampa on Monday, Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Erongo Region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba said a human skull was found in the dunes behind the NCS facility on Sunday, and was removed from the site as preliminary investigations continued.

“We have removed it and we continue to investigate,” Shapumba said.

He confirmed on Monday that several other skeleton remains were dug up during the preliminary investigation and that these remains are suspected to date back to six or seven years.

Additionally, Shapumba said they received information from community members that the land where the skeletons were found, might have been used as a burial site in the past. This information still needs to be verified with the community’s traditional leaders, in addition to the possible identification of the remains.

Shapumba assured community members that they should not be alarmed as the situation is being handled.

“We ask that the public not panic as of now, we are taking control of the matter,” he said.
