Mother and toddler run over by truck at Otjiwarongo

A 29-year-old woman and her two-year-old baby boy on her back were on Saturday night run over by a truck on the Otjiwarongo-Otavi road.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Sunday said the woman died on the spot, while her son survived the accident in a critical condition.

The accident occurred some three kilometres north of Otjiwarongo at approximately 23h00 on Saturday night.

Mbeha said the deceased has been identified by her close relatives as Maria Hunibes, adding that the baby was Saturday night transferred to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital for further medical attention.

The police officer said it is still unclear to the police where the deceased and her son were coming from or headed to at that hour on foot.

A 45-year-old truck driver who was involved was treated for shock at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital shortly after the accident.

The Otjiwarongo police has opened a culpable homicide docket again him (truck driver).

Police investigations in the matter continue.
