Motswana man crushed to death by trailer

A 33-year-old Botswana national died on Friday in Walvis Bay after a fully loaded truck trailer he was fixing reportedly pressed him against the truck wheels causing his death.

It is alleged in a crime report issued on Saturday by Erongo Community Affairs Commander Inspector Ileni Shapumba, that Dithore Meliaye who was in the company of a cousin when the incident happened, had parked at a service station when he decided to get under the trailer to fix it at around 23h20.

He was declared dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Walvis Bay Police mortuary for examination to determine the cause of death.

His next of kin have been informed.

In another matter, a 63-year-old man died after the sedan he was driving in solely from Arandis reportedly collided head-on with a truck loaded with charcoal approximately 30 kilometres before Usakos.

According to Shapumba, the sedan caught fire after the collision which was extinguished by the Fire Brigade and bystanders after the deceased was removed from the vehicle.

The incident occurred at about 02h00 on Friday.

The 52-year-old truck driver who was also driving alone was taken to Usakos State Hospital for medical attention but is in a stable condition.

The deceased’s body was taken to Usakos hospital’s mortuary for certification and storage.

In an unrelated matter, a 34-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf Thursday night in the Otjimbingwe area’s Middle Pos after she reportedly had an argument with her sister and boyfriend.

According to the report, the argument occurred at around 20h00 when Fabiola Fatima Mutunda reportedly arrived home. She then left the home and her body was later discovered by a passer-by hanging from a tree.

The next of kin have been informed.

Police investigations in all the matters continue.
