Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) on Friday launched its Women in Golf programme, as well as announced its three-year partnership with the Windhoek Golf Club.

The Women in Golf programme aims to empower women in the sport of golf and promote their participation in the sport.

Speaking during the launch, MTC’s Chief Legal, Compliance and Risk Officer Patience Kanalelo said the sport of golf is traditionally known as a male sport and this programme is, therefore, a powerful driver in encouraging inclusive participation in terms of gender representation.

“Golf is known as an exclusive sport where men clinch a business deal. As MTC, one of our core brand values has always been to encourage diverse participation and break long-held stigmas and traditions that exclude the participation of women in certain societal events,” she said.

Kanalelo added that the programme will be facilitated by Joe Hauwanga, an experienced golfer who runs various developmental golf programmes at the MTC Windhoek Golf Club.

“To accommodate more women, the programme will be divided into three intakes. We want to have more women from all walks of life benefiting from this initiative, therefore the programme will be split into three intakes with each intake going for two months long,” said Kanalelo.

She stated that each intake will have 30 new aspiring female golfers (beginners) and after six months, a total of 90 females would have gone through the programme.

“After going through the programme these women can decide to continue with the sport on their own as by this time they would have acquired all the necessary skills,” she said.

Windhoek Golf and Country Club General Manager, George Vink stated that the collaboration with MTC is crucial to promoting the sport of golf and its sustainability in the country.
