NAMBIAN BOXER WINS WBF WORLD WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

Namibian boxer Bethuel "Tyson" Ushona has won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) world welterweight championship after defeating Poland's Rafal Jackiewicz at the Ramatex complex in Windhoek over the weekend.

The judges scored the fight 112-109; 115-112; and 116-109 in favour of Ushona after 12 rounds of boxing. He now has a record of 35 wins, five losses and one draw.

Ushona, 34, won the belt less than six months after his first attempt against Deniz 'El Pistolero' llbay of Germany in Walvis Bay.

Despite losing the fight on Saturday, Jackiewicz put the Namibian down in the first round but Ushona recovered and dominated from then on.

Speaking to the media after the fight, Ushona said he knew he had a tough opponent with a wealth of experience but is happy he delivered on his promise of winning the title.

Ushona said he will be back in the gym soon to start preparing for his next fight, which might take place in March against an opponent yet to be decided.
