The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) have released the names of five people who died instantly in a collision on the Tsumeb-Otavi B1 road on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased persons died when a Volkswagen sedan and an Iveco passenger bus collided head-on, at approximately 26 kilometres south of Tsumeb.

The incident happened at about 16h13.

According to NamPol’s head of public relations, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi in an interview with Nampa on Monday, the five deceased people were identified by their close relatives as Michael Holongo, 36, who was the driver of the sedan.

Four other occupants who perished in the accident from the sedan are Martha Silvanus, 36, Flora Sheendelwako, 35, three-year-old Ferdinand Sheendelwako and the two-year-old Letshia Martin, she said.

Flora Sheendelwako was a constable at the Otjiwarongo Police Station, she said.

A 45-year-old woman who was with them in the sedan survived the accident with serious injuries, said Shikwambi.

Meanwhile, Shikwambi said 10 people from the Iveco bus, which had 21 occupants at the time of the incident, suffered injuries, including its 30-year-old male driver.

“Together with the survivor from the sedan, this brings the number of the injured to 11. They were all taken to the Tsumeb State Hospital on that same Sunday afternoon,” she said.

Police’s preliminary investigations indicate that the Iveco was coming from the direction of Otavi, and as it tried to overtake another vehicle it was following, a head-on collision occurred with the sedan, which was headed in the opposite.

A culpable homicide docket was opened at the Tsumeb Police Station against the driver of the Iveco, who was still hospitalised at the town by Monday, she said.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
