Namibia Champ of Champs horse racing competition set for Okahandja

The Okahandja Racing Club (OHRC) in conjunction with Standard Bank Namibia will host the second edition of the Namibia Champ of Champs horse racing competition at Okahandja Turf on Saturday.

The competition will see horses from Okaondeka, Otjinene, Okahandja, Ohauro, Professor, Mouton, Kobos, Epukiro and Harambee racing clubs, as well as individuals with horses challenging each other in 16 sprints.

In an interview with Nampa here on Thursday, one of the event organiser Manes Hendriks said the occasion is principally aimed at assembling all champion horses from various competitions in different race categories.

He said that about 80 horses so far registered and the winners will vie for N.dollars 100 000 plus trophies, adding that the best Jockey will be awarded with a trophy.

We have included the award of the best Jockey to motivate and boosts the morale of the man on the horse, Hendriks explained.

Among others, Seasonal horses Kings Kitten, Freedom Fighter, Bucks Bunney, Sunny Side, Von Trotha, Little Gypsy, Rockley Beach, Epic, Kapenailonga and Saterdag will feature in the competition.

In Thoroughbred category, horses Benino and Sufi-Summer from Aminuis Racing will vie for the first time in the competition after performing well in Spring Handicap recently in Gobabis.

The new entrants Thomas Jefferson and Bring Me More from Junius and Okaondeka racing clubs respectively, will be in Okahandja as well, Hendriks emphasised.

Besides Freedom Fighter, Uaraa Tjiho will contest with Try Again, Surprise Number One and Hampton Rocket in the competition.

Horses like Freedom Fighter, Von Trotha, Bright Eye, Icon and others will compete in the Nambred 2200m D Division, which is the main sprint for local horses.

The Thoroughbred horses will compete in the 2200m race, which is also the main sprint for the import horses.

Starlile from OHRC won the champ of champs' competition last year.
