The Brave Warriors crashed out of the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup tournament following a 1-0 defeat to Mozambique at Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The defeat means Namibia (seven points) will finish third on the log behind Senegal (nine points) and Mozambique (seven points).

Mozambique qualifies for the semi-finals because they have a better head-to-head record against Namibia.

Namibia needed to avoid defeat against Mozambique to qualify for the semi-finals but conceded a late goal from Mozambique’s substitute striker Melque Melito Alexandre in the 81st minute.

The Brave Warriors played four matches in Group B, winning two (2-1 against Senegal and 2-0 against Zimbabwe) and drawing 1-1 against Malawi before losing 1-0 to Mozambique.

Speaking after the match, assistant coach Robert Nauseb said Namibia played two tough games in two successive days, which is why the players could not cope.

“That is not an excuse, but the boys gave everything in this match. We still have the World Cup qualifiers to look forward to. We will go back and assess the team and see where we need to improve,” Nauseb added.

He further blamed match officials for Namibia’s loss to Mozambique, saying they were biased against Namibia and that they failed to stamp their authority on the game.

Nauseb stated that the team was well prepared for the tournament and as a technical team, they are happy with what they saw.
