and lt;P and gt; Namibia has had significant achievements in improving the livelihoods of thousands of citizens with the lifting of about 400 000 people out of poverty over the past 25 years of independence. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;President Hage Geingob said this while addressing hundreds of delegates at the official launch of the National Dialogue on Wealth Distribution and Poverty Eradication conference which started here yesterday morning. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;According to Geingob and the latest figures released by the National Statistics Agency, 69 per cent of all Namibians lived below the poverty line in 1993. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;Eighty-two per cent of the country’s population in rural areas was estimated to be poor compared to 39 per cent in urban areas. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;The President told the delegates to the conference that by 2010, the overall poverty rate in the country had been reduced to 29 per cent from 69 per cent. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;Geingob said this is unprecedented progress for Namibia in global terms. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;He said as articulated in his State of the Nation address of 21 April 2015, these statistics are testament to the immense work done by the Government in alleviating poverty in the country. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P and gt;The Head of State however said Namibia cannot allows itself to be consoled by a 40 per cent poverty reduction rate, adding that its target is the immediate alleviation and eventual eradication of poverty through sustainable and targeted efforts. and lt;/P and gt; and lt;P/ and gt;
