Namibian Police Force arrested a 24-year-old Angolan woman on charges of concealment of birth and attempted murder

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old Angolan woman on charges of concealment of birth and attempted murder in the Omusati Region's Anamulenge Constituency.

Spokesperson of NamPol in the region, Linekela Shikongo, told Nampa the incident took place at Ombundamuti village around 06h00, when the suspect allegedly gave birth to a healthy baby boy on her own at a house where she was employed as a domestic worker.

The suspect was admitted to the Outapi District Hospital under police watch, and will appear in the Outapi Magistrate's Court once she is discharged from the hospital.

'She failed to report the birth to anyone and purportedly walked to the pit latrines of the Ombundamuti Combined School, where she threw the baby into the pit,' Shikongo said.

School children visiting the toilet to relieve themselves heard a baby crying and reported the matter to the school principal who in turn alerted the police at about 15h00.

The baby was transported from the scene with an ambulance and is admitted to the same hospital in good condition.
