Namibian teams slump to defeats at COSAFA Championships

The national women senior football team Brave Gladiators and the Under-20 (U20) women team registered defeats in their second matches at the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Going into their match on Saturday against Zambia the Brave Gladiator needed a win to keep their hopes of competing in the semi-finals of the competition alive after their 0-1 defeat to Botswana in the opening match of the championship

Namibia's dream of winning their first match at the competition were made difficult by HellenMubanga two goals for Zambia and her teammate Mary Mwakapila goal which saw the Namibian team succumb to a 2-3 score line.

Zenatha Coleman and AnnousckaKordom goals were not enough as the Namibian girls lost their second match in Group B at the Cosafa Women's Championship that was held at the Wolfson Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The defeat means the Namibian team will not progress to the next round of the competition. They are now third in the group but levelled on zero points with their next opponents at the championship Mauritius.

Zambia's win took them to six points in the pool, the same number as Botswana, who defeated Mauritius 3-0 in their second Group B encounter.

Meanwhile, the Namibian U20 team who started off the competition with a 2-1 win over Mozambique at the inaugural COSAFA Women's Under-20 Championship on Thursday lost their first match at the championship on Saturday to hosts South Africa who sealed their place in the semi-finals with a 0-1 victory over them.

Shakeerah Jacobs scored the only goal of the game in the 10th minute as South Africa moved to six points.

Namibia's U20 side still has a chance of making the semi-finals in this inaugural U20 championship if they beat Zimbabwe on Monday. Both teams have lost a match against South Africa and are levelled on three points from two matches played thus far

Namibia's U20 team next game will be against Zimbabwe on Monday at 10h00 while the Brave Gladiators will take on Mauritius on Tuesday at 15h30.
