Navachab marathon launched

WINDHOEK; Navachab Gold Mine on Tuesday announced a sponsorship worth N.dollars 45 000 towards the Navachab half marathon which takes place in Karibib on Saturday.

The 21.195 kilometre (km) national challenge is an initiative of the Karibib Town Council and the Navachab Gold Mine.

This is the first-ever half marathon to take place at Karibib.

Speaking during a media briefing here on Tuesday, race director and Omaruru sports officer Berthold Karumendu said the race will be a good stepping stone for all upcoming long-distance runners.

“Young people do not have opportunities at youth level to craft their long-distance running skills, and with initiatives like this at least young people will learn how to use their speed to run long distances, and when they know they are good enough they can then go for marathons. A marathon is not child’s play, you need good endurance and speed,” he said.

Karumendu further indicated that there are ‘great’ prizes up for grabs for the first, second and third placed in the various categories, which are junior (13-19 years); senior (20-39 years); veterans (40-49 years); and masters (50+ years).

The marathon will start and finish at the Usab Field in Karibib.
