Newspaper Cup 2023 launched at Otjiwarongo

The 21st edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament was officially launched at Otjiwarongo on Tuesday.

Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, Marlayn Mbakera officially launched it at a local hotel, saying the tournament is set to take place from 07-10 April 2023 at the Paresis Sports Complex.

“We are prepared as a region to host the 21st edition of this newspaper cup comprising of both the football and netball teams of the country’s 14 regions,” she said.

Mbakera gave assurance for the decent accommodation of all guests, decent sports grounds and other facilities which will be renovated.

She also announced the fundraising gala dinner which will take place on 14 March this year at Otjiwarongo.

The Namibian Newspaper’s Deputy News Editor, Isack Hamata on his part said the tournament aims to help boys and girls to have an opportunity to enjoy sports and also to identify and develop their talents.

“Football winners on top of their floating trophy and medals will receive N.dollars 30 000 for champions, runner-up N.dollars 20 000 and in third place N.dollars 16 000,” he said.

The netball’s overall winning team will receive N.dollars 25 000, second place N.dollars 12 000, third N.dollars 6 250 and fourth best will get a cash reward of N.dollars 3 125, said Hamata.

There are also cash prizes in categories of player of the match, top goals scorer, goalkeeper of the tournament and match official of the series, said Hamata.

Around 500 regional participants and their officials are expected to attend.

A draw for the different groups was also conducted at Otjiwarongo on Tuesday, and the defending champions of the cup, the Zambezi Region will play off the Khomas Region for the first match, while the netball defending champions of the Khomas Region will face off Ohangwena Region on day one of the tournament.

Standard Bank Namibia is the official sponsor of the tournament.
