Namibia School Sport Union (NSSU) chairperson, Theofilus Nuugulu, was recently elected as the Southern Zone president for the new African School Sport Federation (ASSF) executive committee.

The inaugural edition of the Africa Schools Championship elective assembly was held earlier this month in Casablanca, Morocco.

“School sport in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) resumed at a slow pace, two of the three member countries have not yet resumed. I take this as a great opportunity to see to it that school sport bodies in all member countries with their governments speed up the resumption of school sports,” Nuuguulu said in an interview with Nampa on Tuesday.

He added that having a representative in the ASSF executive is a good thing for Namibia and the zone because it will enable the region to be served better at continental level.

“Talent identification, grassroots development and improved continental and international participations are the areas that I want to improve for our zone. Ensuring zonal (SADC) competitions at South Africa’s Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) level for us to fully participate in continental championships, sourcing sponsorship for less privileged athletes and seeing schools grow at all levels,” Nuugulu said of his immediate priorities.

Other members that were selected to serve in ASSF Exco from 2023 to 2027 are Morocco’s Youssef Belqasmi (president) deputised by three vice presidents; Soulemane Kone Mamadou (Cote d’Ivoire) as the first vice; Smith Judicael Ayadokoun (Benin) as the second vice and Joseph Olabisi Temitope from Nigeria as the third vice president.

Another Moroccan national, Maher Abdellah, is the general secretary, whilst Kenya’s David Exovers Ngugi is the general treasurer.

The South Zone president is Nuugulu from Namibia, Uganda’s Justus Mugisha is the East zone president, the North Zone president is Abdelhafid Izem (Algeria), the Central Zone president is Valerie Lebondo (Gabon) and Togo’s Ayouba Zibo is the West Zone president.

The five assessors are Imane Mohammed Hassan (Egypt), Drame Djibril (Mali), Aaida Linglize (Tunisia), Christopher Mugisha Banage (Uganda) and Abuy Mokoko Roberto Nzang (Equatorial Guinea).
