Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) received three Eco awards at the Hospitality Association of Namibia’s (HAN) award ceremony held at Lüderitz in the ||Kharas Region on Sunday.

NWR, in a media statement issued on Monday, said the awards are given to accommodation establishments that are planned and managed in accordance with eco-friendly principles.

The Olifantsrus, Onkoshi and Dolomite Camp resorts were recognised in this regard, with all of the establishments receiving four flowers.

Five flowers is the highest rating.

“Eco Awards Namibia is a distinction for lodging establishments that are planned and managed in accordance with environmentally friendly principles. The programme encourages the careful and selective use of resources by promoting reducing, recycling and reusing,” the statement said.

An establishment’s profitability can be improved as a result of this process, often with very little additional expenditure.

The programme is based on similar schemes in other countries, but the criteria used in those schemes have been modified to fit the Namibian environment.

NWR Managing Director, Matthias Ngwangwama was quoted in the statement as saying NWR takes pride in ensuring environmentally friendly tourism.

“Eco-friendly tourism exemplifies our success in ensuring quality service delivery and focus. These awards are a clear indication of NWR’s vision of becoming not only Africa’s top tourism destination, but also of our mission of creating memorable tourism in a sustainable manner,” Ngwangwama said.

He stated that receiving an Eco Awards desert flower certificate indicates that the establishment adheres to an environmental care standard and implements sustainable practices for the future of the immediate environment, the company, and the people.
