Old Mutual Awards Victory Race Winners

Namibia’s long distance runners Uveni-Nawa Kuugongelwa and Alina Armas scooped the honours at the Old Mutual Victory Race Series prize-giving ceremony in Windhoek yesterday.

They were the first overall winners in the male and female categories upon conclusion of the 14th edition of the popular annual Old Mutual Victory Race Series this year.

Besides the guaranteed automatic participation in the highly competitive Two Oceans Marathon slated for South Africa early next year in April, the winning pair of Kuugongelwa and Armas also walked away with N$15 000 each.

Second and 3rd placed overall finishers in the men’s category Johannes Naitembu and Simon Shipingana both took home N$10 000 and N$5 000 each in that order, while 2nd and 3rd placed finishers in the women’s category Anna Amukoto and Helena Iipinge also both pocketed N$10 000 and N$5 000 each for their efforts.

The series has gone from strength to strength and is attracting more and more athletes each year who crave the glory, monetary rewards and the challenge it offers. A very g field of participants from all over Namibia ran in four legs of the race series to qualify for the title.

Old Mutual Namibia, Managing Director, Sakaria Nghikembua congratulated all the participants, notably the two overall winners for an exceptional achievement and also went to great length to emphasis the reasons why Old Mutual is investing in the future of Namibian athletes and sports in general.

“Over the past 14 years, Old Mutual’s commitment of over N$ 4.2 million towards these annual races has not only made it possible for thousands of Namibian athletes to compete abroad, but also offers the opportunity for them to compete at the highest level while also achieving personal goals in their career.
