Omaheke crowned Debmarine champions

Omaheke were crowned the winners of the third edition of the Debmarine Namibia Senior Regional Netball Championship at the Khomasdal Stadium Netball Courts in the early hours of Sunday morning following a 31-16 victory over Omusati.

The two teams emerged from the group of death, (group A) which also consisted of Khomas, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Kavango West and Oshikoto regions.

Omaheke prevailed in that match by a 26-21 scoreline.

Having reached the finals after beating Oshana 24-08, Omaheke took an early lead in the proceedings by outscoring by Omusati 17-09 points at halftime.

Omusati clawed their way back into the match in the second and final quarter of the match to narrow the gap 19-14 points but Omusati's sharp shooter TjatindaToetsieTjihero took over the show and stretched the lead for her side.

Traditional powerhouses, Khomas, Otjozondjupa and Erongo failed to contest the semi-finals as they were ditched in the group stages, meaning the host region could not defend their title.

For winning the title, Omaheke received gold medals, goal post protectors, and N.dollars 30 000.00 while for being runners up, Omusati received silver medals, goal post and a N.dollars 15 000.00.

Third placed Kavango East who defeated Oshana 20-14 in the playoff walked away with bronze medals, goal post protectors and N.dollars 9 000.00.

Speaking to Nampa after her team's victory, Maureen Geingois said the victory was due to hard work by her team.

For us as a region this is a great achievement as we prepared well for this tournament. The girls deserves this as they stuck together even when things were not going well. It's a victory for the region, he said.

Omusati coach Lazarus Mungolo blamed poor match official for his teams defeat.

The match empires stole the victory from my girls. The opposition committed several fouls against us but officials let it go. I however appreciate the way the girls played. It was a good tournament, he said.

This is the second consecutive year that Omusati has lost in the final after their 34-10 to Khomas in the last year's final in Tamariskia, Swakopmund.

Martha Shaambeni of Omusati was named player of tournament while GlenethVetjivera of Omaheke was named defender of the tournament.

Tjihero was named shooter of the tournament with MbahimuaKakuenje of Khomas region named best mid-court player.
