Omaheke Top 8 tourney set for weekend in Gobabis

The ninth edition of the annual Omaheke Top 8 football and netball tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the Legare Stadium in Gobabis.

The tournament is organised each year by the Epukiro Sports Council and was initiated with the aim of grooming and developing sports within the Omaheke Region and is strictly for teams hailing from Omaheke, according to the council’s spokesperson Kuveri Tjonga.

In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, Tjonga said each of the Omaheke Region’s seven constituencies is expected to send at least eight teams to the competition, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic impact on both sports and the economy, only a few teams registered compared to 60 during the last edition.

Twenty-eight teams registered for football and 16 for netball. In the football category, teams were divided into groups A and B, with all Group A matches to be played at the A field, while the B field will host Group B matches.

In Group A, the first match will be Ovinjuru up against Ozombuzovindimba, to be followed by Oslek versus Otjozondjima, while Inter-Dee jaVituua will lock horns with Okanguindi in the third match. Eastern Swallows will, later on, take on Red Fire, followed by Ezorongondo up against Otjimanangombe. Renamo Bucks will tackle Okei followed by Otjeue City taking on Okaumbangere in the final match of Group A.

The B field will entertain Otjiuarongo versus Rovers United in the first match to be followed by Outakaha versus Otjimati while Omaueozonjanda is up against Kalkpan. Ofarama will tackle Renamo Bucks B team, Five Eclacico will take on Straight Forward to be followed by Pamwe Eleven and Okauua Rising Stars while Ino City will take on Okauua Rovers.

The netball fixtures will see Okauua Rovers up against Renamo Bucks in the first game, followed by InterDee and Otjimanangombe. Okauua Rising Stars will play against Rovers United, Otjiuarongo will battle it out with Otjozondjima, Otjeue City will take on Ovinjuru, Osleka versus Renamo Bucks B team, Easter Swallows will play against Red Fire while Kalkpan will go up against Ofarama.

An amount of N.dollars 35 000 will be up for grabs, with N.dollars 25 000 set for the football category and the remainder for the netball category.
