Interviews for the next Ombudsman, which will be held on Friday, will be streamed live and will be accessible to the general public, the Office of the Judiciary announced on Monday.

The decision to publicly hold the interviews follow calls from pressure groups, including the Affirmative Reposition, for transparency from the judiciary in the appointing process of the person to replace the current Ombudsman, John Walters, who retires at the end of July.

'In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the JSC at its meeting of 04 June 2021, resolved to conduct a public interview, which includes live streaming of the proceedings. It is in this context that the JSC further informs that the interview will be live-streamed on the official website of the Office of the Judiciary and members of the public may follow proceedings,” reads a statement issued on Monday.

The statement further announced that three candidates, Tousy Namiseb, Ruth Herunga and Basilius Dyakugha have been shortlisted for the interview.

The three were shortlisted after the judiciary received four applications for the position, one of which was dismissed owing to the applicant failing to meet the requirements of the position as advertised on 10 May 2021.
